Hi, I’m Alan

I’ve been meditating everyday for over 20 years now. I have also sat many multi-day silent retreats in that time.

Over the years my practice has carried me through some fantastic times in my life and also some pretty terrible ones. Whatever is going on for me, my practice is there as a source of strength, helping me to show up in my life with more insight. A bit calmer, a bit kinder, and a bit more self-compassionate.

My aim for the group is to help others to do the same - to help you find your calm, insight, kindness and self-compassion.

The group mainly practices in the Insight Meditation tradition. However, over the years I have practiced seriously in all 3 of the main Buddhist meditative traditions. For a long period I was a regular at Jamyang, a Tibetan Buddhist centre in London. During that time I undertook a two year intensive course with Geshe Tashi Tsering, a Tibetan monk who lived in London for many years before he became the Abbot of Sera Mey monastery. I also formally took Refuge with Geshe Tashi in November 2012.

I have also practiced for many years in the Soto Zen tradition and ran a weekly Zen meditation group in South West London for 4 years, where I also organised events with well-known Soto Zen teachers like Brad Warner and Taigen Dan Leighton.

Although I have maintained my contact with Soto Zen teachers and practice, I now mainly practice in the Insight Meditation (Mindfulness) / Theravada school and have undertaken a number of multi-day silent retreats in that tradition. Having practised Yoga for over 10 years I have also had experience of Vedic meditation, a system that originates in Hinduism.

In November 2025 I was authorised as a Community Dharma Leader by the Gaia House Teaching Council. This was only the second time in its history that Gaia House - one of the oldest and most respected meditation centres in the UK - has appointed Community Dharma Leaders and it was a great honour to be recognised by them.  The authorisation followed an intensive 18 month training course led by Anushka Fernadopulle, Zohar Lavie and River Wolton and with the teaching faculty drawn from many well-known Gaia House teachers.

During the course I was lucky enough to be personally mentored by Martine Batchelor, who spent over a decade as a nun in Korea and who has written a number of well-known books about Buddhism and meditation.

Although I am certainly not an expert in every type of meditation, my wide experience does mean that I have a good understanding of different techniques and meditation systems. Giving you the chance to try different methods hopefully helps us to work together to find a meditation practice that resonates with you.
